Helping businesses in the South West

Cornwall Start Up: Cabin Fever Productions

As SWIG Finance has passes the £10 million milestone for loans given to new businesses around the South West under the government’s Start Up Loans scheme, we take a look back at some of the businesses across the region we’ve supported in that time.

Since 2012, we’ve helped 1,245 entrepreneurs across the South West with 290 loans worth £2.32 million in Cornwall. Among those to benefit are visually impaired musician Hoby Allen, from Redruth, who set up Cabin Fever Audio Productions, a recording and live sound engineering service in Lanner, in early 2014.

Almost four years after SWIG Finance loaned him £10,000, he has paid off the loan and is now regularly working with four freelance sound engineers, providing PA hire and live sound services around Cornwall.

He said: “The business has come a long way since I started four years ago – we’ve refitted the rehearsal room and have listened to the market which has shown that live sounds and PA hire was the way to go.

“We were getting double booked regularly so I’ve had to bring in other guys. It’s got better every year and there’s not really been a down side since we started.

“The loan from SWIG Finance was instrumental in the company beginning so I remain incredibly grateful to have been given the opportunity to develop the business.”

John Peters, Managing Director of SWIG Finance, said: “As one of the first Delivery Partners to join Start Up Loans five years ago, it is hugely rewarding, having reached this landmark, to reflect on the incredible amount of new entrepreneurship that the scheme has stimulated here in the South West, and the legacy that has already been created.

“Start Up Loans is a key part of the government’s strategy to encourage entrepreneurship in the UK, increase the rate of business creation and improve survival prospects. It provides the right support at the right time and is a fantastic scheme to be part of.”

SWIG Finance is part of a network of similar organisations delivering Start Up Loans nationally, and in the South West, SWIG also provides investment to established businesses looking to finance their next stage of growth.
