Louise & Dan Briggs of Billings & Briggs Ltd, Natural Wine Merchants, with key team member Charlie Jones, meet Will Wright, general manager at Left Handed Giant Ltd, on Bristol’s newest landmark bridge to celebrate their future plans.
Billings & Briggs have agreed on an exclusive partnership with Left Handed Giant Ltd, a celebrated and go-ahead independent brewery, to exclusively supply wine for their new ‘BrewPub’ opening in early June. The site is at Finzel’s Reach, the developing Leisure Quarter in the centre of Bristol, now reached by a stunning footbridge across the river from Castle Park. Channel 4 Television are also basing their new broadcasting & production Hub on the site as part of the move out of London.
Billings & Briggs started in 2015 with a small loan from SWIG Finance. Their dream was to bring Natural Wine to the attention of bars & restaurants in the West Country, the South West region and further afield. The company is a rising star that is making a real impact by sourcing, importing & selling what was once a niche product within the wine trade. It is now recognised as a dynamic and quickly growing market.
The company recently came back to SWIG for more finance to enable business growth and to reach new customers. In under 4 years since the start, they have a strong name in the industry and sell a diverse range of Natural Wine to the trade and the wine drinking public across the region and beyond. They have also made important strides in changing how wine is packaged to meet increasing environmental concerns. Billings & Briggs have put Natural Wines on the South West map.
The timing of this business could not have been better. More restaurant and bar owners are looking for wines they are proud of, that are different from their competitors and which meet the growing expectations of customers who want to know that the wine they choose is produced in an ethical and sustainable way.
Asked about the new partnership Dan Briggs said “It’s a perfect match. Left Handed Giant really understands the quality and diversity of the wine we sell and both partners know the wine will never be an also-ran alongside their own craft beer products They value their customers who choose wine and they have chosen our Natural Wine for their new high-profile venture.”
Natural wines are described as ‘Nothing added and nothing is taken away’. It includes organically grown grapes, ethical production methods and packaging that minimises Co2 and the use of glass.
SWIG Finance is proud to have helped Billings & Briggs who found it impossible to borrow on the commercial market to start and develop their business. Sarah Osborn, Business Manager based in Bristol said; “It has been such a pleasure to work with Dan & Louise and to get to know them. Their quiet but determined vision of how to bring the quality and diversity of Natural Wine into the mainstream market has been a learning experience for me too. I hope we can continue to support their ambitions to grow the business in the future”.
Louise Briggs outlined future plans. They would like to bring together in one place their office and separate storage in Bristol as well as their larger bond store which is currently in South Wiltshire. They would love to set up a ‘destination’ site where they can showcase Natural Wines from Europe and homegrown the UK. The public and the trade would come to sample and buy Natural Wines and maybe eat and drink at the same time in an on-site small bar & café. That will certainly need further finance and SWIG will be happy to discuss it with them when the time comes. Cheers to a New Partnership in Bristol following a loan from SWIG Finance”
